Pet exercise

How much exercise does my dog need?

This will depend on your dog’s age, breed, and overall health. If your pet has any health conditions, see your vet to talk about safe exercise guidelines.

Most dogs require 30 - 60 minutes of physical activity a day – enough that they’re feeling tired and starting to slow down by the time they stop.

Active breeds need at least 30 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise daily, or at least most days of the week. Small or toy breeds, especially those prone to obesity, also need regular outdoor exercise and walks.

A walk or hike is a great way to let your dog explore and navigate obstacles. You can also take your furry friend with you when you go jogging or cycling, so both of you can enjoy a workout together.

Cats usually require a few 10-15 periods of activity throughout the day (kittens typically need more frequent exercise than older cats). They tend to be fussier than dogs, so be sure to provide a few different options to see which kind of exercise your cat likes best. Encourage your kitty to play with a toy, chase a laser or explore a cat tower or obstacle course.

Remember, good exercise should provide both mental and physical stimulation, so make the effort to explore new walking routes or introduce new games, to keep your pet’s mind engaged.
